Now that summer is finally here and hot days are the norm, it would make good sense to continue our exploration of Melbourne, but indoors!

Looking through the multitude of website offering things to do in this marvelous city, we decided on visiting the Old Treasury Building one hot Sunday afternoon.

The Old Treasury Building is one of the finest public buildings in the city. Completed in 1862, it was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1994. It provides an avenue for visitors to understand and explore the city’s history, architecture, art and daily life.

Upon walking into the building steeped in history, we were greeted by a cheery lady who took pains to explain the free activities available on the ground floor and the basement level.

We trooped off to the various rooms. Instantly, history came alive as we saw the exhibits of daily life in the 19th century and early 20th century right before our eyes.

Other rooms housed old photos of Melbourne city as it was built way back then.

The star of the visit has to be the rooms in the basement that used to house bars of gold! Life during the gold rush era has been detailed

If you have a spare hour while in the city, it would be worthwhile to go visit this grand old dame of a building. Walk in and out with a better appreciation of the history of Melbourne!
