The restaurant is well known for its yong tofu dish where you can choose from a wide range of ingredients made of tofu, minced meat and fish paste. We had their signature dish before so this time, we decided to try their Claypot Yee Mee with pork rib pieces and also their Yam Ring with Chicken.
First to arrive was the Claypot Yee Mee.
The yee mee noodles with generous servings of bite sized pork rib pieces were served on a heated claypot (which the owner took pains to warn me about). The aroma of black bean paste sauce wafted up as I stirred the dish. The dish certainly did not disappoint. Well cooked and presented with succulent pieces of pork ribs, eating was an exercise in delight as it brought us instantly back to dining in the alleyways of Singapore in the 1980s.
Before we could get over the first dish, out came the Yam Ring.
Picture a well fried yam ring of about 6 inches diameter filled with tender pieces of chicken and onion slices. The crispness of the ring belied the hidden treasure of the soft yam within its walls. Cutting through the ring, we enjoyed both the yam and chicken bits together by the mouthfuls and it was well worth the trip there. So there you have it, a place that does the Yam Ring dish and does it well.
The next time you find yourself at the Flemington area, do drop by M Yong Tofu Malaysian Cuisine Restaurant. It looks non-descript but we assure you the food served are at the next level!
