Growing up in Singapore, the closest I ever got to classical music was to listen to it on the radio every now and then. Not being able to play any instruments or read sheet music, I am most impressed by musicians, especially classical ones.
Now that I have more free time to indulge in this interest, it was quite a surprise (to me anyway) that regular and free concert recitals are being organised within the Melbourne CBD.
The first one we ever went to was by the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne.
The venue was practically next to the Flinders Street Train Station and getting there was a breeze. I was initially a bit apprehensive about the dress code (was thinking about maybe having to dress up in stuffy formal wear) but it was good to note that only neat casual wear was required.
Hamer Hall is seriously impressive! The grandeur of space at this venue wows the senses.

The experience of just being there blew us away, even before the music started!
After an hour of listening to world class music being played, we left, with spirits lifted up.
Apart from Arts Centre Melbourne, there are other venues offering free to public recitals. One such location would be the Lunchtime Concert Series at the St. Paul’s Cathedral (1pm on designated Wednesdays).
This is surely on our list of places to attend the next time we head for the city.
