Fancy a medieval village in Melbourne? Come visit Montsalvat!

What if we told you that there is a place within 30 minutes from Melbourne that looks and feels like a quaint European village of ages ago?  The Monsalvat Arts Community promises just that and more!

Established in 1934, it is Australia’s oldest community. Monsalvat is named after the castle of the Knights of the Holy Grail in German mythology. The architecture is heavily inspired by the medieval French villages and Gothic cathedrals of France & Spain.

Monsalvat was built to bring together like minded people for the creation of art (“Where the life of art is lived”). Today, it hosts workshops, classes and exhibitions. You will be amazed by the architecture, the sense of space for picnics and the many workshops & art galleries.

Arriving one Sunday afternoon, we were immediately awed and transported back to the little villages we used to visit in the UK. The entry fee of $14 per adult wasn’t too daunting to enjoy a picturesque afternoon.

Walking through the various buildings and soaking in the artistry of the location, one could not help but marvel at the attention to detail given to the construction of the period homes. There is a small church even.

While enjoying your walk on the grounds, don’t forget to go see Snowy the white peacock!
